OK. Looked up how to test the MAF while the car is running and it appears to be working ok by checking the voltage coming from the signal wire. Holds steady at idle and rises consistently and holds with throttle and drops with release of throttle, basically responds to how much or how little throttle you are giving it. However I have a little Bluetooth scan tool thing that allows me to see what the reading is to the ecu while I'm driving. When the issue arises it appears that the number drops as if less air is going through.

Has anyone had the electronic throttle body stuff go bad?

That could be my problem. What were your symptoms?

The first one went bad a couple of months after I bought the car. It was a known bad AA series part that was replaced under warranty and a TSB. The second went bad in 2014 when it was freezing ass cold outside. Both times it exhibited the same thin: an apparent limp mode that wouldn't let the engine build speed and a surging at idle. I found through dumb luck that heat would solve it temporarily, so I'd let it idle a few minutes to get some heat in the block, then shut it down and let it soak. It would run fine after that. It happened one more time in February 2015 after I had replaced the TB on my own dime. Same conditions, same result.

Brutal, I hate when stuff goes bad in the cold. Usually means I'm gonna have some frozen fingers trying to replace it.

Quick update. I took the car to another guy and he found a weird reading coming from the tcm. Under "tire size (rev/mile)" the reading should be between 0 and 255. The number the car was giving was 808. Soooo that could probably cause some weird behavior.

I thought so too. I am not a car guru but I am beginning to think either my tcm is acting up or one of the plugs/sensors that feeds the tcm must be messed up. I will report back when this other shop does more thorough diagnosis, apparently this next place is the shop that all the other shops send the cars they can't figure out.

Well just talked with the guy from the shop. For some reason the pcm is retarding the timing of the motor, next step will be to make sure the cams are all in time with the crank. If that's good then it might be the pcm.

The guy seemed to think that if the cams are just slightly off then the pcm can cover for it for a while but can't keep up forever. Bringing it back in after the 4th

Still no news from the shop. However before I brought it back to the shop it wouldn't start for a couple days, it would only make a click down where the pcm is. I don't know what that could be hopefully they can figure it out.

Wow. That almost seems like a power issue. Have you checked grounds?

I had gone through them, so I think they are ok. From all the wiring diagrams I could find I got them all. However final update. Turns out the motor was just slightly out of time..... the previous owner must have messed it up himself or the shop he brought it to messed it up. Either way it screwed the chain and guides and a bunch of other stuff so I'm stuck with th 1500 dollar bill... awesome...

I'm going to check grounds again but I might just replace the starter so I don't have to get towed by AAA I'd the car decides not to start again.

Oh it's just a joy, pure joy. Hopefully this takes care of it. Starters look pretty cheap for this motor remanned are only like 65 I think. Hopefully this helps someone else
